If you see * in the per area please note this is one of the styles that can not be offered in any other time frame that the one shown.

NOTE:  Deep tissue massage is not the same as deep pressure. Deep tissue massage is used to work on the deeper layers of muscle and does not always require deep pressure to achieve the desired results. Deep tissue massage works in the area the pain is felt and where it is originating from. Deep tissue is not a full body massage session.

Medical Massage

75 minutes * : 100.

image
Medical massage is outcome-based massage, primarily the application of a specific treatment targeted to the specific problem(s) the patient presents with a diagnosis and are administered after a thorough assessment/evaluation by the medical massage therapist with specific outcomes being the basis for treatment. It is also known as clinical massage.

Massage has been considered to be 'medical massage, since the mid-1800s. In 1886, William Murrell, an English Physician wrote a book Massage as a Mode of Treatment. In 1902, Douglas Graham, MD of Boston Massachusetts wrote Manual Therapeutics, A Treatise on Massage which focuses on the treatment of specific diseases and disorders by the method of massage.

The American Medical Massage Association and The United States Medical Association followed with similar goals of lifting the profession to higher standards and, in turn, giving patients a better outcome. The AMMA has worked with the standard medical community to accept massage therapy into the mainstream; they have done this through a board of advisers that includes massage therapists, physicians, chiropractors etc.

The term medical massage has grown in popularity because of its unique ability to bring massage therapy into the mainstream and present massage therapy in a positive way. More highly trained professional massage therapists are raising their education levels and integrating the term medical massage into their services by getting certified as Medical Massage Practitioners, like I did several years ago.

The term medical massage was birthed out of:

  1. The public's need for highly skilled, hands-on therapists in treating those with injuries and chronic pain.
  2. The present explosion of information in the injury-rehabilitation field.
  3. The benefit patients receive with medical massage.

Medical massage is useful in addressing conditions such as:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Piriformis sybdrome
  • Sciatica
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Pain associated with bulged or injured spinal disks (medical massage cannot 'fix' the disk, but can help alleviate much of the pain associated with the injury).
  • Migraines/headaches
  • Pain associated with pregnancy
  • Muscle pain and cramps
  • Range of Motion issues
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Back and Neck pain
  • Repetirive use injuries; tennis and golfer's elbow, carpal tunnel
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • TMJ
  • Pain associated with restricted fascia
  • Pain associated with postural imbalances
  • Work, Auto, Sports & Exercise injuries
  • Edema
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
  • Pain from over use of text neck and thumb pain. Pain from using tablets, laptops and phones playing games for long periods of time.

Myofascial Release

60 minutes: $95.00

Myofascial release is a form of soft tissue therapy intended to eliminate pain, increase range of motion, and rebalance the entire body. It does this by using massage techniques to stretch the fascia and release the bonds that exist between the fascia, muscles and bones. Fascia is the connective tissue that connects and covers all muscles, organs, and skeletal structures of the body. Direct myofascial release is sometimes known as deep tissue work. Indirect release applies light pressure and gently stretches the fascia; this allows for increased blood circulation and relief from pain.

Myofascial release is a form of massage therapy used to help relieve somatic (body) dysfunction and the resulting pain & restriction of motion.

The goal of myofascial release is to relax contracted muscles, increase circulation and lymphatic drainage, stimulates the stretch reflex of muscles and the overlying fascia.

Fascia is the soft tissue part of the connective tissue. This provides protection and support for structures with the body, including muscle tissue. Soft tissue can become restricted due to overuse, trauma, psychogenic disease, infectious agents and inactivity. These restrictions can result in muscle tension, pain and diminished blood flow.

During a myofascial release session fascia, muscle tissue and other soft connective tissue may be addressed.

Depending on the training received myofascial release may be referred to as; myofascial trigger point; soft tissue manipulation work, connective tissue massage, soft tissue mobilization, foam rolling, structural integration and strain-counterstrain. There are two main categories passive or active. During a passive technique the patient stays relaxed whereas in an active technique the patient provides resistance as needed. Passive and active techniques may be both be used in the same session.

Direct myofascial release (deep tissue) engages the myofascial tissue restrictive barrier. Keeping a constant force until the tissue releases. This work is done slowly with a small amount of force to bring about changes in the myofascial structures by elongating and stretching of fascia and mobilizing adhesive tissues. The practitioner moves through the layers of fascia.

Different practitioners bring their own style, knowledge, and experience to their work which can have a significant effect on their client's experience.

Indirect myofascial release is a gentle stretch allowing the fascia to unwind. The tissues are guided along the path of least resistance until a release is gained.

The indirect technique originated in osteopathy schools and is also popular in physiotherapy.

Some of the many benefits of  myofascial release;

Myofascial stretching in one area of the body can be felt in and will affect other parts of the body. Release of myofascial restrictions can affect the bodies organs through the release of tension in the whole fascia system.

All muscle stretching will stretch the fascial. However, not all stretching is myofascial release work.

Fascia covers all organs of the body, fascia and muscle cannot be separated.

************************************************************

  • Lightly contact the fascia with relaxed hands.
  • Slowly stretch the fascia until reaching a barrier/restriction.
  • Maintain a light pressure to stretch the barrier for approximately 3–5 minutes.
  • Prior to release, the therapist will feel a therapeutic pulse (e.g., heat).
  • As the barrier releases, the hand will feel the motion and softening of the tissue.
  • The key is sustained pressure over time.

Reflexology

60 minutes: 75.

Reflexology is a type of bodywork that focuses on applying pressure to the specific nerve zones in your feet. Unlike other foot massages that intend to mostly relieve tension in the feet themselves, reflexology is a far more in-depth science that aims to harmonize your entire body. According to reflexology, every part of the human body is mapped into your feet. Reflexology treatments have been found to be highly effective for conditions such as allergies, headaches, and depression.

According to the Mayo Clinic;

Reflexology is the application of pressure to areas on the feet, hands and ears. Reflexology is generally relaxing and may be an effective way to alleviate stress.

The theory behind reflexology is that these areas correspond to organs and systems of the body. Proponents believe that pressure applied to these areas affects the organs and benefits the person's health.

Reflexologists use foot charts to guide them as they apply pressure to specific areas. Sometimes these practitioners use tools to assist in their work. Practitioners of reflexology include chiropractors, physical therapists and massage therapists, among others.

Several studies funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health indicate that reflexology may reduce pain and psychological symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, and enhance relaxation and sleep. Studies also show that reflexology may have benefits in palliative care of people with cancer.

Reflexology is generally considered safe, although very vigorous pressure may cause discomfort for some people.

CranioSacral (SM)

60 minutes: $75.00

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle yet powerful technique that is effective in releasing neck pain, back pain, and mental stress (among other things). It does this by optimizing the movement of cerebrospinal fluid through the spine and around the skull.

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. It was pioneered and developed by Osteopathic Physician John E. Upledger after years of clinical testing and research at Michigan State University where he served as professor of biomechanics.

Using a soft touch which is generally no greater than 5 grams – about the weight of a nickel – practitioners release restrictions in the soft tissues that surround the central nervous system. CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and it''s effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.

How does CranioSacral Therapy Work?

Few structures have as much influence over the body’s ability to function properly as the brain and spinal cord that make up the central nervous system. And, the central nervous system is heavily influenced by the craniosacral system – the membranes and fluid that surround, protect and nourish the brain and spinal cord.

Every day your body endures stresses and strains that it must work to compensate for. Unfortunately, these changes often cause body tissues to tighten and distort the craniosacral system. These distortions can then cause tension to form around the brain and spinal cord resulting in restrictions. This can create a barrier to the healthy performance of the central nervous system, and potentially every other system it interacts with.

Fortunately, such restrictions can be detected and corrected using simple methods of touch. With a light touch, the CST practitioner uses his or her hands to evaluate the craniosacral system by gently feeling various locations of the body to test for the ease of motion and rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid pulsing around the brain and spinal cord. Soft-touch techniques are then used to release restrictions in any tissues influencing the craniosacral system.

By normalizing the environment around the brain and spinal cord and enhancing the body’s ability to self-correct, CranioSacral Therapy is able to alleviate a wide variety of dysfunctions, from chronic pain and sports injuries to stroke and neurological impairment.

What conditions does CranioSacral Therapy address?

  • Migraines and Headaches
  • Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Stress and Tension-Related Disorders
  • Motor-Coordination Impairments
  • Infant and Childhood Disorders
  • Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Fibromyalgia
  • TMJ Syndrome
  • Scoliosis
  • Central Nervous System Disorders
  • Learning Disabilities
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Orthopedic Problems
  • And Many Other Conditions

Orthopedic Massage

60 minutes: 75.

Orthopedic massage is a style of massage therapy focused on treating painful conditions that affect the soft tissues of the body. Because orthopedic massage is designed to treat medical conditions, it requires extensive training. It involves releasing tense muscles, helping to stretch and lengthen tight muscles and tendons, and decompress rigid joints. My goal is to restore full health to the soft tissues of your body, both treating your specific conditions as well as improving your overall well-being.

Orthopedic Massage is designed to assist in relieving discomfort and pain in the muscles and the soft tissue that connects to bones.

Your therapist may use ask for your help during an orthopedic massage sesion to achieve the desired results. There is more movement of the clients limbs during this type of appointment. The goal is to help correct problems.

The goal is to restore full functioning by eliminating any adhesive scar tissue or fascial restrictions, rebuilding strength, increasing range of motion and either restoring or increasing flexibility. In an orthopedic massage practice, your therapist may use a combination of friction therapy, massage therapy, anatomy trains or some other form of myofascial work, muscle energy techniques, positional release, active release techniques, trigger point therapy, active isolated stretching and strengthening and various other modalities.

While some client find the session relaxing it is not what most people think of when they think of a massage session.

Migraine/Other Headache Therapy

30 minute session * : 55.

COLD STONE THERAPY FOR MIGRAINE & OTHER HEADACHES

Specially designed cold marble stones strategically placed to decrease the pressure of dilated blood vessels, and the use of aromatherapy oils made specifically for the most common types of headaches. Time and time again, this treatment has proven effective at stopping acute headache pain.

Cancer/Oncology Massage

60 minutes: $75.00

Oncology Massage is a special type of massage developed specifically for cancer patients. Cancer patients have unique needs which must be addressed to make sure that a massage is beneficial to their health. I focus my attention on creating a gentle, nurturing environment for you to relax into.

Oncology massage therapy is especially effective in counteracting the myriad side effects associated with chemotherapy. Helping people experiencing cancer face the life changing challenge.

Oncology massage therapy helps to alleviate cancer related and cancer treatment related pain, many people find their nausea is reduced.

Recent studies at several research hospitals have shown Oncology massage therapy also reduces anxiety in patients, improved sleep patterns in cancer patients, reduced fatigue

People experiencing cancer find that oncology massage helps them cope with their many symptoms. But they report it is beneficial for helping them cope with emotional problems - such as stress, depression, anxiety, loneliness, and fear.

Oncology massage therapy is also helpful in promoting positive characteristics such as improved self-image and concentration.

Oncology massage studies have shown that it can improve the effectiveness of the various cancer treatments including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and physical therapy.

Oncology massage is used in hopes that the nurturing touch of massage will connect the person experiencing cancer with an attitude filled with hope and courage.

Oncology massage is a targeted sesson toward boosting the healing process of those who are experiencing cancer.

Oncology massage therapy uses gentle massage as well as reflexology, healling touch, Reiki  and acupressure to help fortify both the physical and emotional well-being of the patient. Reflexology applies light pressure to the reflex zones of the foot, which encourages the balancing of the related body system and organs. Acupressure targets distinct points on the body in order to foster physical and emotional balance. The massage is gentle and providing comfort and support to the healing process.

Noted cancer research centers have approved the use of massage therapy after recent research shows that there is no data to support the opinion that  massage is contraindicated as a treatment for cancer patients because of the belief that massage could actually cause cancer cells to metastasize by causing cells to dislocate from the cancerous area and regroup in other parts of the body. There is no data to support the opinion that massage can cause metastasis, and the positive benefits outweigh the theoretically possible risk.

Lymphatic Drainage

60 minutes: $75.00

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a type of gentle massage which is intended to encourage the natural drainage of thelymph from the tissues space body. Within us all there is a silent system working to keep us healthy- the lymph system. Without it our bodies would swell up like balloons, swamping our cells with stagnant fluid. The lymph system's impact is so far reaching that many don't even realize that minor aches and pains, low energy or susceptibility to colds and flu may be due to a sluggish lymph system and a compromised immune system.

The lymph system depends on intrinsic contractions of the smooth muscle cells in the walls of lymph vessels (peristalsis) and the movement of skeletal muscles to propel lymph through the vessels to lymph nodes and then beyond the lymph nodes to the lymph ducts which return lymph to the cardiovascular system. Manual lymph drainage uses a specific amount of pressure (less than 9 ounces per square inch) and rhythmic circular movements to stimulate lymph flow.

Manual lymphatic drainage was pioneered by Danish  Drs. Emil Vodder and Estrid Vodder in the 1930s for the treatment of chronic sinusitis and other immune disorders. While treating patients with chronic colds, the Vodders noticed these patients had swollen lymph nodes. In the 1930s, it was considered taboo to tamper with the lymphatic system due to the medical profession's poor understanding of this system. The Vodders were not deterred by this and, in 1932, began to study the lymph system, developing careful hand movements to cause lymph movement. In 1936, after four years of research, they introduced this technique.

Lymph vessels make an intimate meshwork that covers every inch of your skin, and surrounds each organ in great detail. The lymph vessels start very small in what are called the initial lymphatic. Over 70% of the initial lymphatics are in and just under the skin. The initial lymphatic is a very delicate structure, one cell thick. Those cells are supported within the connective tissue by collagen and elastin fibers that help to anchor them in place. When the pressure within the interstitial space increases due to a buildup of fluid, or when the skin is slightly stretched, the filaments deform the wall of the initial lymphatic, opening it up. Then the interstitial fluid flows in and starts to move along the channel. At this point we start calling it lymph. Although only 2-3 liters of lymph is filtered through the lymph system per day, it is vital because it helps to remove proteins that that are too large to get back through the capillary wall. The spaces that open in the initial lymphatic are 4 to 6 times bigger than the spaces in the capillaries. Removal of protein is essential because they draw water to themselves, so excess protein in the interstitial spaces causes swelling or edema. The lymph vessels also collect dead cells, waste products, bacteria, viruses, inorganic substances, water and fats.

By performing lymphatic drainage massage correctly, we can stimulate the opening of the initial lymphatic and increase the volume of lymph flow by as much as 20 times. But if we push too hard, we collapse the initial lymphatic, diminishing the lymph flow. This is one reason that deep styles of massage are contraindicated in areas of edema. After the lymph has entered the initial lymphatic, the lymph moves into a larger vessel called the pre-collector, and then into even larger vessels called the collectors. These vessels have one way valves every 6- 20 mm that only allow the lymph to move in one direction. From one one-way-valve to the next is called a lymphangion. The lymphangions have a layer of smooth muscle that spirals around them. The walls of the lymphangion stretch when they fill up with lymph, and then the stretch sensor tells the muscle to contract. This spiraling muscle contracts squeezing the lymph into the next chamber. This swells the next lymphangion, which then contracts, pushing the fluid down the line. At the same time the lymphangion is pushing the lymph forward, it also is creating a vacuum behind it.  Once the lymphangions begin contracting, they cause a chain reaction, or a wave of contractions that start to push and pull the lymph through the body. In this way stimulating lymph flow in one area can increase lymph flow in another.  All lymph vessels lead to lymph nodes. Lymph nodes can be as small as the head of a pin, or as big as an olive. There are 400-700 lymph nodes in the body, half of which are located in the abdomen, and many are in the neck.

The primary function of lymph nodes is to filter and purify the lymph. The lymph nodes produce various types of lymphocytes. Lymphocytes destroy harmful substances within the body, and are a big part of the immune system. The lymph nodes reabsorb about 40% of the liquid content of the lymph. This makes the lymph much thicker. Because of this thickening and the filtering process, the lymph nodes offer the greatest resistance to the flow of lymph. In fact the lymph nodes offer about 15 times more resistance than the vessels themselves. Lymphatic drainage can help overcome this resistance and get the lymph flowing.

Lymphatic drainage massage is a profound technique to help increase lymph flow. With an increase of lymph flow immune function is increased. Harmful substances are removed from the tissues and neutralized in the nodes. It has also been shown that an increase in lymph flow stimulates an increased production of lymphocytes- enhancing immune function.

Lymphatic drainage can be applied to clients who are suffering from a lack of energy, or a sluggish immune system. Lymphatic drainage massage is also useful when working with clients who have sports injuries. After the initial inflammatory stage has passed, lymphatic work can be applied after another type of massage has been completed. This will help to clear the tissue of debris, and help to reduce the minor edema that sometimes occurs after deep massage. Continued applications of lymphatic drainage while the client is healing can help to enhance the tissue regeneration process by keep the tissue as healthy as possible.

Another common use for lymph drainage massage is with women who have had breast cancer and had some axillary lymph nodes removed. Sometimes these people develop edema in their arm. If the swelling is minor then a fully trained lymphatic drainage therapist working in conjunction with medical supervision can do a great amount of good.

For the most part lymphatic drainage massage is safe. With such a light touch, the danger of causing damage to the tissue is slim. However, there are a few conditions that are contraindicated, and these happen when an increase of lymph flow would be detrimental. It is a good idea to get clearance from their doctor if you ever feel uncertain about working on someone. Acute inflammation, Malignant tumors, Thrombosis and major heart problems are all contraindications to lymphatic drainage massage. Acute inflammation caused by bacteria, viruses, poisons or allergens is contraindicated. You can tell if this is the case because the tissues will be hot, red and painful, with congestion accompanied by fever. Malignant tumors are a contraindication for lymphatic drainage massage because of the fear of spreading the cancer.

Thrombosis and phlebitis are two conditions that can lead to free floating blood clots. One indication of a possible femoral thrombosis is when there is pain in one leg and a sudden swelling and bluish discoloration of the skin. People who are bedridden have a greater likelihood of developing thrombosis in the legs.

Major heart problems. If the heart is not fully functioning the edema can be lymphodynamic, due to lack of venous return. Putting more fluid into the heart would only stress it more, worsening the condition.

Fertility Massage

75 minutes * : 100.

This massage is designed to assist a woman who is trying to become a Mom. Fertility massage combines stress reduction bodywork, acupressure and deep tissue work.

Studies show that the hands-on bodywork can dial down your anxiety level. Since stress has been shown to interfere with getting pregnant, it makes sense that reducing stress through massage could — theoretically — improve your odds of conceiving.

The road to pregnancy can be a stressful one. Over time, chronic stress may hijack your attempts to get pregnant. Although we don't fully understand the connection between stress and fertility, we think high stress levels confuse the brain's hormone center. As a result, the brain may not send out the reproductive hormones necessary to tell the ovaries when to release an egg, thus delaying ovulation.

Fertility Massage is a non-invasive massage treatment focusing on specific techniques used to promote reproductive organ health, reduce stress levels and support any other techniques you may be using to have a baby. Techniques include the use of a special aromatherapy castor oil pack, a specific abdominal massage, acupressure, aromatherapy, cranio-sacral therapy, Myofascial release, reflexology, and relaxation massage.

Benefits:

  • Improves circulation to the reproductive organs
  • Helps loosen scar tissue & adhesions in the abdomen area
  • Helps to achieve hormonal balance
  • Helps to relieve menstrual cramps
  • Promotes increase health to the immune system
  • Promotes increase health to the uterus and other reproductive organs
  • Helps relax a stomach that is hardened from stress or digestive issues
  • Helps to improve digestive health and nutrient absorption by promoting small intestine health

Why an Aromatherapy Castor Oil pack?

Castor Oil is made from a castor bean plant and has been used for thousands of years as a healing therapy. The special aromatherapy castor oil pack will be placed on your lower abdomen. A heating pad will be used to warm the oil pack allowing the oil to penetrate and warm the muscles and organs for the massage to be more effective.

When is the best time to receive Fertility Massage?

If you are actively trying to conceive, the best time to receive fertility massage is from the end of your menstrual cycle until ovulation. We suggest twice a week during this time and once a week during the other parts of your cycle.

If you are in the stages of preparing your body to conceive in the future then a monthly or bi-monthly massage will help you relax and reduce the stress hormones in your body. Fertility Massage can be beneficial to any woman who is interested in improving her overall health and well as her reproductive health.

  • If you are in the first trimester of a pregnancy you should not receive massage/bodywork

Dad to be Massage -   Dads to be can benefit from receiving massage therapy too. Choose from any of our therapeutic massage/bodywork styles to reduce stress, relieve aches & pains and increase circulation.

Geriatric Massage

60 minutes: $75.00

Geriatric massage is a form of massage designed to meet the specific needs of the elderly. It helps to improve blood circulation, relieve pain, and also increase range of motion. If you are elderly, geriatric massage can help you maintain and improve your overall health, as well as regain certain physical functions that have been reduced due to aging. In addition, since the elderly don't typically receive enough physical touch, this massage can also help alleviate symptoms of loneliness or depression.

Some possible benefits of massage for seniors are:

  • Increased vitality & alertness
  • Increased mobility/decreased fall risk
  • Enhanced/more restful sleep
  • Decreased pain in joints and muscles
  • Reduced risk of blood clots
  • Improved mood/outlook
  • Relief from dry/itchy skin
  • A feeling of being more connected to the world and body
  • **NOTE Not offered in 90 minute sessions.

Neuromuscular Therapy

60 minutes: $95.00

Neuromuscular therapy is a system of massage techniques that were developed in the 1930's by Dr. Stanley Lief in England. It uses a holistic approach towards healing, emphasizing and stimulating the body's natural ability to heal itself. Neuromuscular therapy also enhances the function of joints and muscles, and accelerates the overall healing process by facilitating the release of endorphins.

This specific and scientific approach to muscular pain relief will help to normalize functional communication between the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system.

Many clients ask for deep tissue massage, and while NMT is technically a deep tissue technique, it is not about the depth of pressure, but rather about specificity -- the specific placement of pressure. If the therapist is on the exact muscle fibers involved, they will not necessarily need to exert a heavy hand in order to be effective. However, each person's perception of discomfort or comfort is difference. As with any of our services please let us know if the pressure is too much.

La-Stone Therapy

Per session * : $100.00

Hot Stone Therapy is a style of massage where heated stones are placed at specific sites on your body as well as used by the therapist during the session to deepen relaxation and promote circulation in your muscles. Muscles that are heated with these stones release tension and stress much more deeply and quickly than with a traditional massage. The overall experience is very relaxing, nurturing, and rejuvenating.

Using warm stones during a Healing Stone session provides quicker and deeper relaxation.

Most clients experience a state of meditative silence during the session, providing the client with a new appreciation for relaxation.

The stones are placed to promote relaxation, the therapist also uses warm stones during the session, this session provides the complete experience of body, mind and spirit.

Lomi Lomi

60 minutes * : $85.00

Lomi Lomi is the Hawaiian word for "massage", and it is part of a larger native Hawaiian tradition of healing and natural body care. According to Hawaiian tradition, all living beings are seeking a state of balance and love in the world. During a Lomi Lomi session, therefore, I focus on not only relaxing your body through gentle touch, but also reviving your spirit and filling your body with the energy of love.

Hawaiian Lomi Lomi has been handed down from generation to generation. Lomi Lomi is designed to balance body, mind and spirit. The rhythmic stokes have a very calming effect. It's like taking a mini vacation to the islands

The Hawaiians look at things in terms of energy flow, following the idea that an idea or belief can block energy flow as much as muscle tension can. Lomi Lomi helps release the blockages, whilst at the same time giving the energy new direction. Thus Lomi Lomi is not just a physical experience; it also facilitates healing on the mental, emotional and spiritual levels as well. The Hawaiians view all aspects of the body as one and believe that the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual are all part of the "whole" self - when healing is effected on one level, all levels are affected.

When harmony is lacking the effect is pain physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually. Illness is a state of tension, which leads to resistance which blocks energy movement. Lomi Lomi helps release this and therefore facilitates the road to healing. On the physical level, through Lomi Lomi stress and tension are relieved, blood and lymph flow assisted and the elimination of wastes and toxins stimulated.

Acupressure is based on one the most ancient principles of healing - that simply touching a specific point on the body will release stress and improve health in the body. In an acupressure session, I apply firm pressure directly to these "points" on your body, which relieves your muscle tension and improves your circulation. This simple and powerful technique has been shown to very effective in treating headaches, backaches, and even insomnia.

Used for thousands of years in China, acupressure applies the same principles as acupuncture to promote relaxation and wellness and to treat disease. Sometimes called pressure acupuncture, acupressure is often thought of as simply acupuncture without the needles. But what exactly is acupressure and how does it work?

What Is the Theory Behind Acupressure?

Acupressure is just one of a number of Asian bodywork therapies (ABT) with roots in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Examples of other Asian bodywork therapies are medical qigong and Tuina. Shiatsu is a Japanese form of acupressure.

Traditional Chinese medical theory describes special acupoints, or acupressure points, that lie along meridians, or channels, in your body. These are the same energy meridians and acupoints as those targeted with acupuncture. It is believed that through these invisible channels flows vital energy -- or a life force called qi (ch'i). It is also believed that these 12 major meridians connect specific organs or networks of organs, organizing a system of communication throughout your body. The meridians begin at your fingertips, connect to your brain, and then connect to an organ associated with a certain meridian.

According to this theory, when one of these meridians is blocked or out of balance, illness can occur. Acupressure and acupuncture are among the types of TCM that are thought to help restore balance.

How Does Acupressure Work?

Acupressure practitioners use their fingers, palms, elbows or feet, or special devices to apply pressure to acupoints on the body's meridians. Sometimes, acupressure also involves stretching or acupressure massage, as well as other methods.

During an acupressure session, you lie fully clothed on a soft massage table. The practitioner gently presses on acupressure points on your body. A session typically lasts about one hour. You may need several sessions for the best results.

The goal of acupressure or other types of Asian bodywork is to restore health and balance to the body's channels of energy and to regulate opposing forces of yin (negative energy) and yang (positive energy). Some proponents claim acupressure not only treats the energy fields and body but also the mind, emotions, and spirit. Some even believe that therapists can transmit the vital energy (external qi) to another person.
